Church School

Rev. Bellas opened a church day school in a one storey cottage in Market Place but later removed to a house where the Swan Inn now stands. With his son, Richard, the school continued until his death in 1815.


1815 Bellas School closed
1820 Town School, Brougham Road, built. Rebuilt in 1877
1829 Church School, Back Lane (Church Lane) built
1856 Church School became infants only
1856 National School, corner of Old Mount Road and Manchester Road, built taking juniors from Church School
1879 Infants School established in Mechanics Institute
1910 Council School, Manchester Road, built
1910 Church School closed
1960 National School closed
