Hey Green
Hey (or Hay) Green is not really a hamlet, but is more of a loosely defined collection of houses and remote farms at the head of the Colne Valley. It is therefore very difficult to be precise about its 'boundaries'. For the purposes of this page, I have included: Piper Holes, Troughs, Purnell Clough, Berry Greave, Hey, Green Owlers, White Hall, Dean Brewery, Wards End, Hopwoods Tong Lee, Buck Stones, and Hay Green.

The age of heads of households in upland farms was remarkably similar - mid-40 to mid-50. It is also interesting to note how many men on these farms were widowed or unmarried.Most people, of course, were born in Marsden, but 10 people on one farm, Piper Holes Far Hill Farm, came from Cheshire.
Hay Green was the home of Joseph Crowther, the mill-owner, who wrote that he employed 'about 200 hands'.
